Opphav / Origin

Sunday 26 February 2023 12:00
at Longyearbyen Church

“Folk music must be held high, pure and real, for it shall be the basis for all future music making in Norway” – Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)

Welcome to a unique concert experience with the Norwegian violinist Sander Tingstad, together with one of the foremost folk musicians in Norway, Mads Erik Odde, and selected string players from the Arctic Philharmonic.

Much classical music in Norway has strong connections to folk music. In his critically acclaimed debut album, Opphav (Origin), Sander Tingstad brings the style of folk music playing into his interpretations of classical repertoire, stating:

I often find that classical music is interpreted in similar ways; Norwegian pieces inspired by folk music are interpreted in the same way as other classical music pieces from the same period. I believe this music has something unique and the focus on folk music elements opens new and exciting possibilities, going back to what originally inspired the composers to write the music.

At this concert you will experience music that blurs the lines between the folk and classical genres, with selections from the album Opphav, as well as new compositions and arrangements by Sander Tingstad.
